Fort Worth-area tracks ready for new year of racing

It might be winter in North Texas, but the local racing action is about to heat up. In the next two months, almost every dirt track or dragway will resume weekly racing or will be hosting big regional events. Here’s a look at some of the events: (NOTE change in Second Annual Cowtown Midget Championships dates and schedule)

Cowtown Speedway (Kennedale)
Second Annual Cowtown Midget Championships
When: Feb. 12-14
Event details: The $60,000 purse event will feature Midgets, ASCS2 Winged Outlaw “Multi” class, ASCS2 Non-Winged 600s, ASCS2 Restricted 600s and Cowtown Modifieds. The Midget feature events on Saturday ($1,000 to win) and Sunday ($3,000 to win) will have 24 cars.

Feb. 12: Practice night, 5-9 or 10 p.m., grandstand closed
Feb. 13: Fan Fest from noon- 1:15 p.m.; hot laps are scheduled for 3 p.m.; racing starts at 4 p.m.

Feb. 14: Grandstand opens at 11:30 a.m.; hot laps are scheduled for 12:15 p.m.; racing starts at 1 p.m.

Tickets: Advance two-day adult tickets ($30) can be purchased at www.cowtownspeedway.com until Feb. 11. On race night, adult tickets are $15 for Saturday and $20 for Sundat. Youth tickets are $5 and child tickets are $2 each day.

Gossage makes good on wager

Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage made good on his BCS championship bet with Talladega Superspeedway counterpart Rick Humphrey on Friday by personally raising the Alabama speedway's flag in front of the TMS administration building. Gossage lost the bet after Alabama defeated Texas 37-21 in Thursday national title game.

Gossage, wearing a University of Alabama hat, braved the frigid winter temperatures as he was hoisted up on a scissor lift to the top of the 25-foot flag pole, where he hung the Talladega flag alongside flags of the United States, the state of Texas and TMS. The Talladega flag will fly throughout the weekend at the 1.5-mile track. No telling on how long Gossage wore the Crimson Tide hat.

“I knew we may be in trouble when Colt (McCoy, Texas quarterback) went out after five snaps due to the shoulder injury, but I was proud of the way the Longhorns kept battling and rallied to 24-21 in the fourth quarter,” Gossage said in a release. “Alabama is a great team, but you did notice they needed a Southlake (Texas) Carroll High product (‘Bama quarterback Greg McElroy) to help lead them to the national title. Congrats to Alabama on a great season as well as Rick, who will get to enjoy some real barbeque next week.”

To complete the wager, Gossage will send Humphrey and his Talladega staff some Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse beef brisket next week.

“I’m very excited to know that the Talladega Superspeedway flag is flying over Texas Motor Speedway,” Humphrey said in a Talladega release. “But more importantly, I’m excited for the University of Alabama and the pride that a national championship brings to our state. I love Talladega Speedway and I love the Alabama Crimson Tide. Today is a great day for both of us.”

Humphrey added on his "Corner Office" blog: "More than 20 years ago I interned under Eddie at Charlotte Motor Speedway and over the years he’s fed me and others a lot of 'bull.' This time, however, it’s some bull I can actually eat."

TMS, Talladega track presidents make 'friendly wager' for BCS game

They don't play football at Texas Motor Speedway -- at least not yet -- but that didn't stop track president Eddie Gossage from making a little football bet with his counterpart at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

Gossage and Talladega president Rick Humphrey have come up with a "friendly wager" for Thursday's BCS national championship game between No. 2 Texas and No. 1 Alabama. The loser will have to fly the flag of the winning speedway on their property beginning Friday morning and throughout the weekend. The losing track president also will have to wear a golf shirt and hat of the winning football team. All this will likely prompt Gossage and Humphrey to swallow a bit of pride considering TMS and Talladega are owned by rivals Speedway Motorsports Inc. and International Speedway Corporation, respectively.

In keeping with tradition set forth by many a mayor or governor, Gossage and Humphrey also will offer up some special home-state fare. TMS will provide Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse beef brisket while Talladega is bidding Dreamland Barbeque ribs.

“I’m always up for a good bet,” Gossage said in a release. “I think Rick will look great in burnt orange and the Texas Motor Speedway flag will look great flying over Talladega Superspeedway. As his former boss, I think he owes me a good meal and those Dreamland ribs will be perfect.”

Of course, Humphrey is confident the Crimson Tide will be victorious.

“I look forward to seeing photos of the Talladega Superspeedway flag flying over Texas Motor Speedway after the Tide rolls over the Longhorns,” Humphrey said in a release. “I may even have to call Eddie on Friday morning and play the ‘Bama fight song for him as he hoists our flag wearing an Alabama shirt and hat. Our staff is looking forward to dining on some delicious Texas beef for lunch next week while we revel in another national championship for the University of Alabama. This has all the makings of a very good
week.”

New Years Day Annual Dairyette Car Show

The Concrete Lizards held a fund raiser for James Crawford.

Over two hundred Hot Rods, Customs and Motorcycles braved the cold to attend the Dairyette Car Show. The Concrete Lizards Car Club hosted their annual fund raiser event. This year the Dallas club was raising money for James Crawford. A master painter/pin striper for over 50 years that is battling cancer. All the proceeds, including money raised from a silent auction, went to Mr. Crawford.
